Pimm’s Cup, a lil backstory

Origins of Pimm's

  1. Creation of Pimm's: The base of the Pimm's Cup is Pimm's No. 1, a gin-based liqueur with a secret blend of herbs and spices. It was created in 1823 by James Pimm, a London oyster bar owner. Originally, Pimm's No. 1 was served as a medicinal tonic in James Pimm’s bar, aimed at aiding digestion.

  2. Expansion: The popularity of Pimm's grew, and in 1859, Pimm's became a more commercial venture when James Pimm sold the rights to his recipe. The brand was then developed further by his successors.

Cultural Significance

  1. British Tradition: The Pimm’s Cup became especially popular in Britain and is often associated with British summertime events such as Wimbledon, garden parties, and other social gatherings. Its association with these events has helped solidify its place in British culture.

  2. Modern Variations: While Pimm's No. 1 remains the most common, the brand has expanded to include other varieties, like Pimm's No. 2 (a Scotch-based version) and Pimm's No. 3 (a brandy-based version). Each of these has its own distinct flavor profile and can be used to create variations of the Pimm's Cup.
