A lil backstory of today’s cocktail
The Suffering Bastard cocktail has an intriguing history that dates back to World War II. It was originally created in the early 1940s at the famed Shepheard's Hotel in Cairo, Egypt, a popular spot for soldiers and travelers during the war.
The cocktail is often attributed to Joe Scialom, a bartender at the hotel, who crafted it to help alleviate the effects of hangovers among soldiers. The original recipe was a mix of gin, bourbon, fresh lime juice, and ginger beer, combining flavors that were refreshing and revitalizing.
The name “Suffering Bastard” is said to have originated from the cocktail’s intended purpose: it was meant to help those suffering from the aftermath of a night of heavy drinking. The drink became popular among American GIs and quickly spread to other bars and establishments.
Over the years, variations of the Suffering Bastard have emerged, with some recipes incorporating rum or other spirits, while still maintaining the signature ginger beer and lime juice. Today, it is regarded as a classic cocktail that reflects the quirky charm and resourcefulness of its wartime origins.
