Episode 82 The Rum Old Fashioned
Ep. 82: Yo ho ho, yar, and all that – Rum Old Fashioned and Six To Midnight
Welcome to Season 6 episode 82 of The Art of Drinking with Join Jules and Your Favorite Uncle
Todays episode is as eclectic as Jules’ drink recipe. Brad finally gives us his favorite Rum Old Fashioned recipe and walks us through his recent visit to Milwaukee (thanks to listener Kat Kutchin for the cocktail hotspot tips – she was spot on). Don’t sleep on Milwaukee, this town has got it going on! Jules goes bananas with a rum, Campari, and scotch negroni. – we are just as confused, but it’s so good.

A lil backstory of today’s cocktail
Blackbeard, one of history's most notorious pirates, is deeply entwined with the lore of the Caribbean and its most famous export: rum. Born Edward Teach (or Thatch), Blackbeard terrorized the seas in the early 18th century during the Golden Age of Piracy. His fearsome reputation was enhanced by his intimidating appearance—he was known to tie slow-burning fuses into his beard during battle, creating a terrifying visage of a man wreathed in smoke.
Rum was a staple in a pirate's life, serving as both a commodity and a form of currency. The Caribbean, with its abundance of sugarcane, was the epicenter of rum production, and it wasn't long before pirates, including Blackbeard, took a liking to the spirit. The relationship between pirates and rum became legendary, with the drink often associated with the lawless and rebellious lifestyle of the seafaring outlaws.
Blackbeard himself was said to have had a particular fondness for rum. His flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge, was often stocked with barrels of it. Rum was not only consumed by Blackbeard and his crew but also used to barter for supplies or to coerce cooperation from those they encountered. The spirit was so integral to pirate life that it became a symbol of the freedom and wildness of the seas that Blackbeard and his ilk represented.
TIP: Where to go when you visit Milwaukee. Special thanks to Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge (home of the Pink Squirrel) and @Inkthebartender and @jack_mercier1 (voted best new bartender 2024 by Punch). Shout out to @tinwidowbarmke, @transfermke, and @atrandommke! Check ‘em out if you’re ever in the MKE.
