A brief history on the Grasshopper

The Grasshopper, a sweet, minty, and creamy cocktail, dates back to the early 20th century and is credited to the French Quarter of New Orleans. It was created by Philip Guichet, the owner of Tujague's, one of the city’s oldest restaurants. According to legend, Guichet invented the drink in 1918 for a cocktail competition in New York City, where it won second place.

The cocktail’s name is inspired by its vibrant green hue, which comes from crème de menthe, one of its key ingredients. The Grasshopper typically combines equal parts of crème de menthe, crème de cacao, and heavy cream, shaken with ice and served in a coupe glass. This balance of mint, chocolate, and cream creates its distinctive dessert-like flavor.

The drink became especially popular in the mid-20th century, during the post-Prohibition era, when colorful and sweet cocktails were in vogue. It was a favorite at supper clubs and dinner parties, often served as an after-dinner drink or "liquid dessert."
